One of the major draws when it comes to playing Pokemon games all your life is battling the Gym Leaders. The first one you take on in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV) is Katy of Cortondo Gym. Over the previous eight generations, some of the Gym Leaders have become a fixture of the overall game with varying levels of difficulty.
The badges you receive upon defeating them are shiny and enhance your status as the next big trainer in the land. Of course, players will have to travel across the different regions of the new map and take on the many challenges they face.
You will also be able to customize your character to a great extent through clothing shops. When it comes to overpowering Katy, there are a few things to know before the battle and the following guide will help you figure them out.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV): What is the Cortondo Gym Challenge
Players eager to face off against Katy in their first battle will have to wait a bit longer upon reaching the Cortondo Gym.
This is because you will need to complete the ‘Olive Roll Challenge.’ When you reach Cortondo, the Olive Harvest Festival is on and you will have to help it by signing up as a helper in order to roll the olives.
There will be a maze on the map and when you reach it, once you finish the conversation, you will find yourself in the maze.
There is a humongous olive in front of you and you have to roll it around the maze to the basket at the end. There are some clever passages to divert into as well, which can be enabled by taking down gym trainers who block your path.
They are easy to beat and after you have cleared an easy route, push the olive to the back of the basket so that it touches all the way through.
This will bring a popup on the screen indicating you have passed the challenge, meaning you are now ready to face Katy in the all-important battle.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV): How to defeat Katy in Cortondo Gym
Before we get to the process of defeating Katy and winning your first badge, it is wise to know about the Pokemon used by the gym leader. Katy makes use of Bug-type Pokemon which include:
- Tarountula (Level 14)
- Teddirusa (Level 15)
- Nymble (Level 14)
Once you know what the opponent’s Pokemon type is, it is easy to understand that you will have to rely on the Fire or Flying type.
Teddirusa is Normal-type with Bug as the Tera, meaning you can opt for Ghost as well.
Nevertheless, make sure you are packed with the former two. Players are advised to focus on these as Teddirusa has a Fury Cutter which inflicts a lot of damage.
Make sure to include Quick Attack and keep Potions and Revive handy in the reserve. It does not matter that she is the maiden Gym Leader, the level of difficulty is much harder from the earlier editions.
There are a lot of good rewards to have from Katy’s defeat including Pounce (TM21), which is a move used for Bug-type that decreases the speed of enemies.
You will also be able to capture Pokemon till 25 and if Katy is your second Gym Leader, then that increases to at least Level 29.
Thus, that is all the information players will need when it comes to battling and overpowering Katy. You will be learning more as you keep on coming across different Gym Leaders and their Pokemon.
In the meantime, keep on increasing your confidence and battle knowledge by capturing Pokemon and improving your arsenal.
