How to fix random freezes in Red dead redemption 2 PC

Irrespective of the PC specs of players, the game audio keeps running and the screen freezes unexpectedly. This is also happening randomly which is annoying for the players.   • DirectX: DirectX 11

  • Processor (CPU): Intel Core i7-4770K / AMD Ryzen 5 1500X
  • RAM: 3072 MB
  • GPU Memory: 4 GB Video Memory
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB / AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB
  • Storage: 150 GB
  • DirectX: DirectX 12


System specs used to test:

  • CPU: I3 9100
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4
  • GPU: GTX 1050ti OC 4GB
  • HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB (7200)
  • PSU: 600W


RDR2 PC freezing fix

  • Launch the game and head over to the Graphics tab.
  • Click on it to unlock it.
  • If you are Running on Vulcan API, switch it to DX12.

And that should be all to fix the random freezing issue, irrespective of RAM size (make sure you have at least 8GB of it).

If the problem still persists, write to the developers here and wait for a potential hotfix.

  1. Doing this helps fps and big freezes but small freezes still happen and audio carrys on. Also when changing to directx you loose HDR which sucks!

    I’d recomend turning your anti virus software off which fixed my crashing issue but the dx12 didn’t work for me

  3. A warning! I try to change the api from vulkan to dx12. But instead of fixing the freezes, it made the matter worse. In my case, the game just didn’t launch anymore! Not even on safe mode! It was a nightmare! Someone else had this problem? The only way to fix that I found, was go to c:\user\documents\rockstar and delete everything in the folder settings! Now the game starts again, but still freezes in ramdon points, and I cant change to dX12. P.S. I have a i5 4670, with a gtx 1070 and 16gb ram. Some said it might be not enough memory, but the vram memory didn’t pass the 5 gb mark, and ram memory keeps below 9gb, so there is plenty of memory left.
