Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel – Complete Banlist Guide

Before we start with the concept of bans in Master Duel, it is important to know the different types of cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel.

Forbidden and Limited

America and Japan have different formats with different cards being allowed to be played, because the current TCG and OCG have different lists telling players what they cannot play.

People wondered what the ban list would be when Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel was first announced. Master Duel has its own list of banned things. Let’s take a look at the scene. All of the cards are available here, forbidden, limited and semi-limited.

What are Bans and Why do they happen?

All game-breaking cards are not allowed. Pot Of Greed and Last turn remain locked away. Red-Eye Dark Dragoon is banned in the OCG but not in the West, showing some slight leaning towards the OCG banlist.

The Wind-up monsters have a place on the F&L list, but they are not allowed in the TCG. Wind up Hunter is banned because of a mean combo that removes 4 cards from your opponent’s hand turn 1.

Set rotation, a card at 1 in both OCG and TCG is not allowed in Master Duel because it is hard to program. Setting a field spell to your opponent’s field could be an issue and it wouldn’t be surprising if other cards with difficult to program effects are also banned.

What are Limited and Semi-limited Cards?

Things start to get interesting now. The True King of all Calamities and the Heavy MetalPhos are not allowed in the card game. The boss monsters are all at 1 and not in Master Duels.

Unfortunately, the greatest card of all time is awesome. ABC DragonBuster is at 1 despite not being of any current meta relevance, but it seems like Limits from a previous TCG list.

Sky Stricker mobilize engage, a card that had been banned, came back to one in the semi-limited. Sky Striker is one of the most powerful decks in the current Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel Meta Game.

Unbanned Card

If the mechanics of bans and limited is crucial, then this is also a vital point in the game. Maxx C is unlimited. The bane to all combo decks is a card as hated as it is loved. Chicken Game is unbanned because it gives insane consistency to decks with small engines and powerful resources loops.

The April 2021 OCG list had some minor changes and this looks like an odd set, so I think this is a good opportunity for it to come back as a tournament product.

It’s already a fairly long time since the last Yu-Gi-Oh game was released and we are expecting a TCG banlist to come out soon. So with that in mind, I think it’s probably a good idea for Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel to be a long term project like Duel Links, rather than something like Duel Links with constant updates as well.
