Dead Island 2: How To Disable Film Grain effect

The release of Dead Island 2 has been received excitedly by players and fans alike, who have been waiting for a decade to get the sequel. While many of us were unsure what was in store here, various players’ reception has been mostly good.

The zombies are back, and players must battle them with some big, bad weapons for their characters. As is the case with any new game, Dead Island 2 does suffer from some performance and graphical issues. In that regard, the following guide will help players disable the film grain effect for PC.

Dead Island 2: How to disable Film Grain effect

Before diving into the specific fixes for the film grain effect, it is essential to understand that despite being an Unreal Engine 4 title, the game has almost no stuttering issues. You have support for FSR 2.0, but some post-processing effects are missing.

This is the category under which the film grain effect falls and what we are trying to address here in this guide.

Dead Island 2 - film grain effect changing

The meaning and effect of film grain is that a cinematic post-processing effect is added, making it appear to be part of a “cinema.” While you may personally want to keep it on, most of us prefer to turn it off in the game.

Unfortunately, the game will not allow you to disable it from the Settings menu within Dead Island 2. Nevertheless, there is a way to disable the effect: opening the Run menu by clicking Windows+R together or via the Search menu.

  • Type in the address: %LOCALAPPDATA%\DeadIsland\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor. Now open the Engine.ini file through Notepad and add.
[SystemSettings]

r.Tonemapper.Quality=0

Save the file and exit the application. Once you finish this, the film grain effect will be stopped, and the image will become cleaner and sharper. Maybe the developers will add a patch that gives the solution within the game’s settings itself instead of moving around. Players can also disable chromatic aberration. As mentioned above, there are some performance issues, but they will be addressed well enough.

Thus, that is all the information players will need to stop the film grain effect in Dead Island 2. It can be of great help if you prefer a sharper and more focused image, but if you want to keep it on, there is nothing extra to do. While there is no easy way to change it inside the game, that can soon change in the future.
