Players adventuring through Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin will come across special characters in several places. Each area has a new character to meet and travel with for a specific area of the game including being with you during battles.

Players only have to interact with the NPCs in order to make them Battle Buddies. They are present in their respective villages and you can simply talk to them. If you have a Battle Buddy already, the game will ask whether you want to switch with the new one. Ena is the only one who has no effect during battles and is there, but the process of keeping or removing is the same.
As players go to each new village and town, their Battle Buddy will be present at the entrance. When you interact with them, there will be the chance to remove them from your group. In the post-game scenario, players can seamlessly switch in between the several Battle Buddies present.

Every Battle Buddy is present in their own town or village except Kyle who is located in Lulucion.
Kyle
Kyle is present near Reverto. Tsukino will also be able to come along with you but will have no effect on battles. Kyle is a hunter so there will be no monstie as he fights with his bow.
Avinia
Avinia is located on the western corner of Kuan Village. She has Barioth monstie along with wielding a hunting horn.
Kayna
Kayna is present near the Stables in Mahana Village and has the Velocidrome monstie. She also carries a sword and shield with her.
Cheval
Located in the Nua Te Village, Cheval has the Rathian monstie and like Kayna, carries a sword and shield.
Alwin
Alwin is present to the opposite side of the Elder within Rutoh Village. He has the Legiana monstie and carries a bow.
Reverto
Reverto is to the north of Lulucion and has a great sword. He is a hunter so there is no monstie.
Ena
Having Ena who has no bearing on battles will not restrict you to having a Battle Buddy as well. She is present around the Elder in Rutoh Village.
