Systems are discovered and progressed in order. The commodities are listed alphabetically. While in supralight space, demand statuses are taken from the inventory. If you have extra space in your cargo, buy low and sell high whenever possible. The greater the rarity of the commodity, the greater your profit.

Try HIVE’s Autonomous Cargo Dispatcher perk enhancement, which allows you to remotely transfer cargo from your ship to your home base.
I used this to ship a load of Earth Wine and Mining Equipment to my base and then return to pick up and sell once its storage space was filled.
Through the main story, you will eventually gain access to fast travel between systems without needing jump gates, although this will take 25-30 hours.
