Resetting Progress

First of all, you will need to disable Steam Cloud. In order to do this, you have to right-click on Psychonauts 2 in the Games menu, and click Properties. Inside of Properties, you will find a button with a checkmark labeled “Keep game saves in the Steam Cloud for Psychonauts 2”. You need to uncheck this button so that Steam Cloud is not able to automatically preserve and restore your old saves. The next thing you need to do is find your Save Data.

The location of your game’s Save Data changes between operating systems, and it’s most commonly stored in “%localappdata%\Psychonauts2\Saved\SaveGames” for Windows. You’ll need to know where it is in order to edit it. It can be found from the directory where you installed the game, most commonly C drive. The step which you have to follow next is to clear your Save Data. Inside your Save Data folder, you will see a bunch of files with the “.sav” extension. Delete all of the “.sav” file extensions. You can choose to leave the “steam_autocloud.vdf” file though.

Hidden/Alternate Option

Alternatively, you can do this in the game itself though it evades the eye of most players. Start the game and go to the “resume game” prompt. In the bottom right-click the “select save slot” button. Now you can select any one of three save slots as active and reset it.

All that remains now is to play the game! If the above steps were successful, when you load Psychonauts 2, you will see the intro cutscene again, and thereafter, the button for “New Game” instead of “Resume Game” will pop up. After you’ve loaded into the game, and can walk around a bit, the game should automatically make a save. Once this automatic save is made, you can re-enable Steam Cloud if you feel like it, and it won’t overwrite your new game progress with the old one.
